Dear Robyn,

It’s been a wonderful summer on the Peninsula!  I’m really loving living on the Coast.

I will be at the Woodside Dressage Finale August 14-16.  I’m looking forward to seeing everyone, and will be available for saddle trials, saddle adjustments, and body work.  It can get pretty crazy during the show, so please let me know ahead of time if you would like an appointment if you can, though I understand that things can come up unexpectedly.

I will have on hand PRI Dressage Pads, ThinLine Sheepskin Half Pads and Shims, Anatomic Girths (Custom & Prestige), Non-stretch Stirrup Leathers (Custom & Prestige), Prestige Ideal Stirrup Leathers (European style single leather with loop at top and t-bar adjustment).

I have a couple of trade-in Custom Saddlery saddles at the moment:

Wolfgang Solo, 17.5″, Long thigh block, standard length flap  great shape, buffalo leather $2500 unfitted.  (A new Wolfgang Solo is $3995)

Custom Advantage, 17.5, standard flap, buffalo, $1800 unfitted.  (new $3995)

Icon Eclipse, 17.5, Short Roll, buffalo monoflap, excellent condition, $3800 unfitted.  (new $4595)

My Massage & Body Work is still building on the Coast!   I have done body work for 16 years, and did that full time in the Chicago area before I became a saddle fitter.

My massage fees are $130

My fees for Saddle Fitting Services can be found on my website

Thank you to everyone for making my transition from the Chicago market to the NorCal market so warm and pleasant.

Enjoy the summer!

Robyn

Saddle Fitting & Flocking Services

This is the perfect time of year to have your saddle flocking adjusted or a complete reflock of the wool done.  I also check the integrity of the tree and make minor repairs when I drop the panels for a full reflock (strip flock).

Here are a few terms that are very commonly used:

  • Flock = Wool  I use 100% natural long fiber wool.
  • Strip Flock or Reflock = panels are dropped, old wool is completely removed, and is replaced with new wool. This is a “take home to my shop” job.
  • Flocking Adjustment = when flocking needs to be rebalanced or added to existing flocking.  *Flock should be checked every 6 months, under normal use, for any asymmetries or compression that could make the panels hard, lumpy, and unforgiving.

I can usually turn around strip flocks pretty quickly, depending on your location.  Saddles for strip flocks without a fitting can also be shipped to me via FedEx or UPS, and returned within a couple of days.  Please call me to make sure I have “bench time” scheduled before you ship your saddle, in order to minimize the turn around time.

Call to Action

A forwarded message from Mike Scott, owner of
Equine Massage & Saddle Fit School

Dear Robyn,

From: Mike Scott, Equine Massage & Saddle Fit School
Feb. 2011

Hello and we hope you are doing well. PLEASE take the time to read this email. It is important to you as a horse owner, therapist or veterinarian.

Veterinary proposal for changes in laws and legislation.

ms horse 1

I would like to start this by suggesting that any of you that know me realize how important it is to me as a practitioner, horse owner and educator that the symbiotic relationship between therapist and veterinarian remain an important one.

This is not a time to be frustrated or angry but a time to voice your concerns and see if they are heard.

I personally feel that it is a shame that all involved cannot come to a simple agreement to what constitutes an appropriate minimum for standard hours of education to be accepted as a standard to allow the non-veterinarian to practice massage therapy or other bodywork related modalities.

Having said that, it is time for you to voice your opinion, protect your rights and most importantly consider your horse.

As therapists, many of us are working in states where animal massage is allowed or it is a gray area. For those working in states where it is not allowed, I’m hoping that practitioners of animals modalities can assist each other and help to make some changes. For you owners, this is important as the outcome could dictate how you make your decisions.

As owners and therapists, you need to be aware that:

A new model is being considered to be written based on the existing 2003 model.

They are asking for public input until

Feb. 14th 2011

The 2003 model defines ALL methods and modes of relieving pain and

preventing disease as being veterinary medicine (with a few

exceptions … such as horseshoeing).

The nomenclature is lengthy but please make the time to read. The most important section is 2.7 but it would be wise to understand the AVMA position.

You may read and comment on changes to the 2003 model here:

http://www.avma.org/issues/policy/mvpa.asp

Click on the tan box in the upper right of the screen for explanation

and directions.

Many of the modalities that are in question that we know are NOT veterinary medicine and are not trying to take the place of veterinarians are massage, acupressure, reiki, myofascial, to name only a few.

It is a shame that people who have studied these modalities and who have helped so many, are in such a position that their livelihood may be threatened.

In conclusion, please read the model, make your statements and be heard.

I would like to thank all of you that took the time to read this, took the time to comment and feel that this is an important enough issue to pass on to your friends, co-workers, animal owners, practitioners, students, etc.

Sincerely,
Mike Scott

Dear Robyn,

It’s hard to believe we’re winding down 2010 and the Holidays are just a couple short weeks away.

I’ve been working on goal setting and New Year’s Resolutions for 2011. Sharing those goals with a close friend can really help to stay focused on them. Somehow, I managed to achieve 8 out of 12 of the resolutions that I’d set for myself in 2010 which, I believe, is an all time record for me. Let’s all Think Big for 2011!

I just returned from Lexington, KY where I met some wonderful horse women, and got to renew my friendship with someone who’s had more influence on me than I’m sure she even knows. (She knows who she is!)

While in Lexington, I picked up my Custom Saddlery trailer and am ready to roll! It is full of demo saddles

Custom Saddlery Trailerfor you to try. I know it’s cold out, but this is the best time of year to make changes for the coming show season.

I have a couple of Massage Clinics for Horse-Owners tentatively scheduled in the Chicago area; one NW of Chicago, and one SW of Chicago. Shoot me an email if you’re interested in attending. In less than 2 weeks, the days start to lengthen again! Happy, happy sun!

Dear Robyn,

It seems impossible that we’re already half-way through 2010!

I’ve just come home from England where I spend a week in Cumbria with
David May, English Master Saddler, honing my flocking and saddle fitting skills. It was a lovely
trip and I was able to squeeze in a bit of sight-seeing and horse-back
riding in the Fells.

In early June, I completed Saddle Fitting School with Mike Scott. I enjoyed traveling to South Carolina for the training; Camden became a home away from home. Please visit my website for details on my saddle related services.

At the end of June, my new horse, Patron, arrived, and I am walking on clouds. He is everything I hoped for and much more. I am thrilled to have started our journey together. He is truly a joy to be around.

We have some exciting prospects coming in the fall. I’ll be resuming my Massage for Horse-Owners Clinics!

Stay cool in the summer heat!

Within a couple of hours of notification of the unlisted feed, it was added. I was impressed.

Attention All Animal Owners
All Non-Veterinary Animal Care Professionals,
 Including Trainers:

House Bill 5377 is scheduled for a hearing and a vote on Wednesday, March 10th, beginning at 10am.
Please call the representatives listed below to tell them you are opposed to HB5377, and you want a right to choose supplemental care in addition to veterinary care in Illinois.

This legislation will require you to get a veterinary referral for all non-medical animal care; from saddle fitting to massage to spiritual healing.  Your trainer will be in violation of this law if they should “assess the health or fitness” of your horse or dog.  The real stickler in the language is that non-veterinary professionals will not be able to advertise their services, for to do so would be construed as advertising veterinary medical services without a license.  It’s a felony.  And that’s what will put hundreds, perhaps thousands of horse, dog, and cat service entrepreneurs out of business in Illinois.  And this in a state with over 11% unemployment.

It is anti-work, anti-consumer, and anti-choice.

Want to get a second opinion about your horse’s lameness?  Now, you will have to get a referral from your primary vet in order to have another vet examine your horse.

No one expects a human massage therapist to be an MD, it is ridiculous to expect an animal massage therapist to be a DVM.  I don’t even know any vets who want to perform massages.

This bill creates a veterinary monopoly over everything that you do with your animal.  This legislation is unconstitutional, but if it passes it will take years and a lot of money to fight it.

Let’s get it stopped before it leaves committee.

A telephone blitz campaign has been organized by The Illinois Alliance for Animal Owners Rights, Inc. (www.iaaor.org)  for Monday and Tuesday of this week.  For instructions as to how you can help, please go to their site:  http://www.iaaor.org/news.html

The best show of support is for people to show up at the Springfield Capitol on Wednesday morning at 10 am.  A sea of supporters goes farther than you think.

Please join the IAAOR or offer a contribution to help pay for the lobbyist that they’ve hired to represent us all.

Please feel free to cross-post this.

Thank you for your support –

Sincerely,

Robyn Drake
IAAOR OFFICIAL POSITION PAPER

This is being handed out to Illinois legislators by the IAAOR lobbyist.  Please notice the list of groups and associations listed at the bottom who are signing on to oppose these changes.  If you are a member of a group not listed below, and would like to add your name to the roster, please email me or contact the IAAOR.

“VOTE NO ON HB 5377 & SB 3712

In 2004, an agreed bill was presented to and passed by the General Assembly that allowed an animal owner or his agent, without veterinary approval, the RIGHT TO CHOOSE practitioners for their animals’ health needs. This bill takes away that choice.

This bill will cause loss of Illinois jobs.

It creates and establishes a monopoly for veterinarians in the animal care profession throughout the State, by denying an individual the right to choose how to care and provide for his animals (livestock, pets, etc.)

This bill will severely limit, if not entirely, eliminate the use of alternative natural proven methods of nutritionists, massage therapy, aromatherapy, homeopaths, behavior specialists, animal communicators, spiritual healers, touch practitioners and physical therapists.

This bill will negatively impact farriers, trainers, equine dentists, animal husbandry and wellness service providers.

You should not be forced to use a veterinarian for chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture, teeth floating, saddle fitting or any other service that you feel would be best performed by someone more knowledgeable in these areas.

It should be well noted that none of the above described services call for surgery to an animal nor do these practitioners prescribe drugs.

Is there any reason to adversely affect peoples’ livelihood when no consumer complaints have been filed with the Department of Financial and Profession Regulation?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR OPPOSITION TO HB 5377 and SB 3712.

Dr. Joyce Kellon:

Equine Nutrition Online Study

I’m not reviewing a book this time, but would like to share with you a valuable online resource.

I have not taken this course, yet. It is on my “MUST DO” list for continuing education.
NRC
This is a wonderful description from Dr. Kellon’s website:
“The starting point for this course is the 2007 National Research Council recommendations for feeding horses. However, that’s all they are – a starting point. They are a tool you will use in evaluating every diet, but I want this to be more than just a nuts and bolts number game. We’ll cover individual nutrients, what they do, why they are essential and how they interact. Feeding a horse properly isn’t like building a house or putting together a puzzle. It’s more like baking a cake. If you leave the baking powder out of a cake recipe, the results are catastrophic and you end up with a cracker instead of a cake. This is the equivalent of a full blown nutritional deficiency. However, adding too much also has negative effects. To get the perfect cake, all ingredients need to be balanced. This dynamic approach, focusing just as much on balance as on intake of individual nutrients, is what I have seen to be the most effective – and also efficient – way to build a sound diet.”
She offers courses in general nutrition, and courses for specific health issues including:
  • Cushings and Insulin Resistance
  • Understanding Bloodwork
  • Neuro and Muscular Disorders
  • Arthritis and Other Lameness
  • Comprehensive Care of the Older Horse
Dr. Kellon’s courses are accredited for continuing education hours for most equine professionals, including the USDF, RACE, Tallgrass, and Equinology.

Enjoy!

The Lame Horse:
Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

by Dr. James R. Rooney

I consider this slim paperback to be essential to every horseman’s library. Understanding the “hows and whys” of leg injuries can go a long way to preventing them. The Lame Horse

You don’t need to read it beginning to end. It is indexed and organized so that you can pick your way through it.

Originally published in 1973, Dr. Rooney explains in “The Lame Horse” the function and mechanics of the front and hind legs, and discusses what happens when things go wrong.

He covers fractures, injuries to tendons and ligaments, muscles, the nervous system and much more.

Dr. Rooney discusses the causes of lameness, how to diagnose every condition and the state-of-the-art methods (admittedly at the time of publication) of treatment. The book, which is about 233 pages long (depending on the format), is full of illustrations and actual X-rays to help you understand not just what went wrong, but also what to do about it.

There are also sections on gait analysis, biomechanics, and the horse’s response to training to help you avoid problems.

Dr. Rooney was the first director of the University of Kentucky’s Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center.

Enjoy!

Dear Robyn,I hope everyone had fabulous holidays, and is now well into the swing of things for 2009.

The cold and snow has made my schedule pretty sporadic in the last couple of months. I thank everyone for their patience in the scheduling and rescheduling, and rescheduling, etc.!

This winter has been hard on our equine friends too. Weeks of snow and ice on the ground contribute to lower back soreness, and tight shoulders in our horses, as they have to change their locomotion patterns to stabilize themselves. I can personally attest for the subtle but significant stress of running on snow covered ground! Much harder work!

January symbolizes a time of endings and new beginnings. With New Year’s Resolutions fresh on the mind, and the days getting longer, I, like most of you, focus on plans for milder temps and more sun. This year I’ve gotten impatient and will be traveling to warmer climes from February 18th through 25th!

Thanks!
Robyn

Winter Lower Back Pain

Your horse has almost certainly suffered from lower back pain at some point.

It is the most common area of discomfort in the horse’s body. The causes are many: poor saddle-fit for either horse or rider, a larger rider using your saddle on your horse, foot pain, an increase in work level, new Lower Back Painmovements, kicking out at pasture mates, wall/stall kicking, and so on. In the last two winters we’ve had a lot of snow cover for extended periods, and I’m finding a pattern emerging in nearly every horse that I work on – winter lower back pain.

As the horse negotiates deep snow, he has to pick up his feet higher which can be akin to walking or trotting over ground poles all day. Even in well packed snow, there is still a bit of a slip that occurs as the hoof pushes off the ground. I experience this same locomotive slip when I run on well-packed snow. It’s barely noticable, but cumulatively takes it’s toll on your energy, legs, and back. It’s just plain harder work.

Ice causes a different set of problems. When you or I are walking over a slick surface, we shorten our stride and contract our muscles as we over-control our movements and make minor (or major!), but constant balance adjustments. Horses do the same, which may cause hip tension in addition to lower back soreness. Horses also occasionally fall on ice, and you may not have any idea this has happened until you try to ride.

This “seasonal” back pain, just has to be suffered through, unfortunately. For comfort, massage is recommended, and heat may also help. I can show you where the pain is on your horse, and I will be happy to show you some simple massage techniques that you can do on a regular basis to give your horse some relief. There are also a couple of very effective acupressure points that I can show you. If you’d like to try heat, I recommend a microwaveable heating pad (no cords!) that you can place under a fleece for a minimum of 20 minutes. (The heat will not penetrate very deep until after 20 minutes.) Be careful that the pad is not too hot.

I do NOT recommend linament in this area at this time of year.

Priniples of Conformation I, II, III
by Deb Bennett, PhD

Principles of Conformation
“By beginning with the horse’s back, we have literally chosen to start
studying conformation from the horse’s “center.” Branching outward from
the horse’s trunk are five parts which function as major appendages:
the four limbs and the neck.”

Excerpt from Principles of Conformation II.

These three small volumes hold the key to most of our horsemanship questions. Each volume is 96 pages, and contains hundreds of photos and drawings. Through helping us better understand the evolution, physiology, biomechanics, and psychology of the horse, Dr. Deb helps us to work more naturally and harmoniously with our horses. Whether your interest is in Eventing, Barrel Racing, or Trail Riding, this series is a must read.

Dr. Deb Bennett is one of the most interesting professionals in the equine industry. She holds a PhD from the University of Kansas, and until 1992 was with the Smithsonian
Institution. She is known as an authority on the classification,
evolution, anatomy, and biomechanics of fossil and living horses.

She is the founder of Equine Studies Institute, which is an always interesting resource for new ideas and research into all manner of horsemanship. Dr Deb is a prolific writer!

I’ve just renewed my membership to ESI (Equine Studies Institute). Until choosing her books for the Review, I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed her works.

**Special thanks to Marian for turning my attention to Dr. Deb again!

Navigating the Labyrinth of
Saddle Fit and Pads

The MOST unpleasant part of my job is having to tell someone that their saddle is causing pain in their horse’s back or shoulders. Saddles are expensive, and I hate to have to be the bearer of bad news.

Saddle fit is one of the most important components to your horse’s comfort and performance.

The horse, like any athlete, cannot reach her performance potential with something bruising or pinching her back with every step.

Most saddles have trees. The tree a is fixed framework, usually inflexible, made of wood or composite, around which the saddle is built. Your horse’s back moves fluidly, and your pelvis, hips, and back are also fluid in movement. Between you and the horse lies an immovable tree. Because of the tree, that acts as a brace, you are separated from the horse. It is critical that this “brace” fit correctly and that it is as neutral as possible for both horse and rider.

Poor saddle fit can cause the rider to struggle for balance and comfort, and can cause terrible problems for your horse’s biomechanics. For example, if the saddle is causing muscular pain, atrophy, and bruising, your horse will probably misbehave, but he may also begin twisting his hocks as a way to disperse the power of the hind legs before it comes up through the painful back. The hock twisting will contribute to arthritis, and muscle atrophy in the croup.

As a therapist, I can tell you if your saddle is a problem, but you really need a master saddler or master saddle fitter to assess the saddle and the horse. The saddle fitter should come to your barn to assess the saddle, the horse, and the rider – together.

If you’re lucky, a change in the flocking will suffice. Some trees can be adjusted, but you may need to change saddles all together.

Padding is not an answer, but should be seen as a short-term compromise until the saddle can either be adjusted or changed.

My favorite pads for intermediary issues is the Mattes Correction Pad. This pad comes with shims, and can reduce the pressure points caused by many saddle fit problems. The fleece is very comfortable for the back, and can be helpful if you’re trying to rebuild atrophied back muscles.

Also keep in mind that fluctuations in weight, growth spurts, or seasonal changes may effect your horse’s shape which will impact the fit of your saddle.

I ride with a natural fleece pad all the time – it is not for any correction, just for my mare’s comfort.

I am happy to put you in touch with local saddle fitters. Email me if you’re interested in a referral.

Book Review
The Horse’s Pain-Free Back and Saddle-Fit Book
by Joyce Harman, DVM, MRCVS

Equine Dreams - Dream Team

“Ensure Soundness and Comfort with Back Analysis and Correct Use of Saddles and Pads”

Everything you ever wanted to know about saddle-fit and more!

If you found my blurb above intriguing, and suspect that you might have a saddle-fit issue, the next step for all you do-it-yourself-ers (or if you’re just a horse-issue wonk), is this book.

This is an extremely thorough, easy-to-read text. It is written for the layman, and explains all the aspects of the saddle’s effect on horse and rider.

It is filled with photos and diagrams, and easy-to-follow instructions for assessing your saddle, your horse’s back, and your saddle pads.

In this book you will find the following subjects:
Evaluating Saddle Problems,
Facets of Saddle Construction,
Correct Fit and Position on the Horse,
Stabilizing Rider Balance and Seat,
Sensible Use of Pads and Shims,
Measuring the Horse’s Back,
Accommodating Multiple Horses,
Fitting Challenging Conformation Types,
Finding a Saddle,
Caring for the Horse’s Back.

If you are going to use a Master Saddler or Master Saddle Fitter, please keep in mind that there are many different schools of thought on the finer aspects of saddle fit and construction. Regardless of all of our words, books, and ideas, keep in mind that the horse gets the final word on the saddle. If the saddle fits theoretically perfectly, but the horse is unhappy – the horse is right.

I use this book as a reference text, and find myself going back to it over and over.

I hope you enjoy the book. I did!

Equine Acupressure – WOW!

Equine Acupressure ChartThe six-day hands-on Acupressure Course from Tallgrass Institute was absolutely fascinating. I’m already incorporating acupressure points into nearly every massage I perform, and I’m seeing terrific results.

The course covered the Beginning and Intermediate training, and prepared me to perform complete acupressure sessions. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is complicated and multifaceted. You could spend the rest of your life learning and plumbing the depths of its philosophies and never run out of new directions and associations.

What I find so amazing is that Acupressure can treat acute and chronic behavior issues. For example, I treated a horse with an oral fixation, and the horse stopped the behavior for the remainder of the massage session. The horse will probably resume the behavior — it’s been a life-long habit– but I showed the owner which points to work in between my regular sessions with the horse.

That’s a win/win in my book!

Book Review
Straightening the Crooked Horse
by Gabriele Rachen-Schoneich and Klaus Schoneich

Straightening the Crooked Horse

This is a DEM (Drake Equine Massage) MUST READ for all disciplines.

This is a thin book, and a quick read though the anatomical language might be daunting for the layman. The exercises in this book are absolutely biomechanically correct, and are quite simple when you boil it down to its basics.
The authors have painstakingly described a series of physical therapy exercises on the lunge line which will straighten the horse, and with proper application, diligence, and time will change your horse’s posture to a more correct way of going.
I implemented the lunge line exercises with my own horse and saw immediate results which translated seamlessly to under-saddle work.
The authors describe eliminating lamenesses with these exercises. The types of lamenesses that they are describing are attributed to asymetrical over-loading of a limb; rein lameness would be an example — not a torn suspensory or other tissue injury.
I think nearly every sound horse could benefit from this work. Care needs to be taken with horses who have a history of injuries or issues that would prevent them from working on small circles even for limited periods. If your horse has a history of lower limb issues, please consult your veterinarian before proceding. There is also a companion video available which demonstrates the exercises described in this book, and it is very helpful.

I had a couple of articles published in September for my charity run; in the Sentinel and the IDCTA Scribe. I had such a great time writing them that I’m planning a series of muscle therapy articles to write over the fall and winter, so watch for them in our local periodicals.I’m also scheduling Massage for Horse Owners clinics for 2009. If you’d like to host one, please let me know.

I look forward to your input for upcoming issues of the newsletter.

Sincerely,

Robyn Drake

IL Veterinary Medical Act ALERT

Call To Action Today:

Many of you have asked me to provide a script and email addresses for the representatives. At the bottom are the email addresses that I could find.

Please call them today.

Below is a sample script of what you might want to say in your messages.

“I am calling you with regard to the proposed changes to the Illinois Veterinary Practice Act of 2004. As a (horse, dog, cat) owner, I want to retain my right to care for my animals as I choose. Please keep exemptions 8 and 15 as they stand in the 2004 Act.”

The IAAOR people are going to be meeting with the ISVMA (IL State Veterinary Medical Assocciation) and others, including their lobbyist , Tuesday Feb 23, 2010 to discuss this bill, the wording, and so forth. The more who call by then to express their dislike of exemptions 8 and 15 have new language, the better.

Also, the more people we have show up for the meeting the better even if you can’t actually get in? Interested parties please contact IAAOR. info@iaaor.org

——————————————————————————————-

Specific Problems with these bills

Tucked within both of these bills is the removal of one exemption (8) and slight changes to (15) from the 2004 Veterinarian Practice Act. IF these two exemptions are removed or modified the Veterinary Practice Act would:

¨ Set more restrictive measures for animal health care than those that exist for humans!

¨ Increase costs to owners, and delays animal care, due to the mandated veterinarian referral

¨ Violate Illinois Right to Work laws for otherwise competent practitioners of alternative, complementary and integrative therapies

¨ Allow veterinarians to practice modalities that are outside the scope of their normal training but prevents persons trained in those modalities from practicing them

¨ Infringe on animal owner’s freedom of health care choices. After all, who pays the bills?

¨ Jeopardize many acts of animal husbandry, e.g., hundreds of animal trainers would be in violation of this law per proposed exemption 8.5

¨ Create a monopoly of one profession over another, harming the consumer

¨ Infringe on Freedom of Religion for spiritual healers

ACTION
If you contact these Illiinois legislators, please indicate that as an animal owner you oppose the profession of veterinary medicine taking away your responsibility to freely choose health care options for your animals without unnecessary veterinary intervention. This is a consumer choice issue.

Attention All Animal Owners

AND
All Non-Veterinary Animal Care Professionals,

Including Trainers:

There is new, and disturbing, legislation pending a vote on Wednesday, February, 24th, in the Illinois legislature, that would repeal the 2004 definitions for the Veterinary Practice Act.

A telephone blitz campaign has been organized by the The Illinois Alliance for Animal Owners Rights, Inc. (www.iaaor.org) for Monday and Tuesday of this week. For instructions as to how you can help, please go to their site: http://www.iaaor.org/news.html

Here is the copy of the information that I have received at this time:
“For all of you with friends in Illinois, please take the time to contact them regarding the proposed changes in the Illinois Veterinary Medical Act. The IAAOR is planning a phone blitz for Monday and Tuesday. Please be aware that this is the wave of the future for all states, so keep your eyes and ears peeled.Over the years, the veterinary profession in Illinois has tried to form a complete monopoly of its industry, keeping anyone who is not a licensed DVM from providing non-medical services for animals. In 2004 The Illinois Alliance for Animal Owners Rights, Inc. (

www.iaaor.org) was instrumental in the passage of Exemptions 8 and 15 to the 2004 IL Veterinary Medical Act.In 2004, via our Exemptions, it was agreed upon by all parties including the Illinois Department of Professional and Financial Regulation (IDFPR) that the Vet. Practice Act allowed an animal owner or the agent of the owner–without veterinary approval– the right to choose licensed or unlicensed practitioners for their animals’ health needs. In a meeting last winter (February 2009) with officers of the IAAOR, the IDFPR reversed their interpretation of Exemption 8.

Now the Illinois State Veterinary Association has formalized all of this into legislation. Their two bills, HB5377 and SB3712, introduced in the first two weeks of February 2010, will delete our original exemption and formally stop all practitioners of complementary and alternative therapies from practicing in Illinois without a referral from a veterinarian. They have split exemption 8 into 2 parts, with exemption 8.5 directly aimed at animal trainers restricting what they can do to, and for, animals in their care.

Illinois has a thriving alternative natural healing community of professionals and lay practitioners. Passage of these bills would eliminate nutritionists, massage therapists, aromatherapists, homeopaths, behavior specialists, animal communicators, spiritual healers, TTouch practitioners, and physical therapists to name a few. It could negatively impact farriers, trainers, equine dentists and animal husbandry and wellness service providers.
